My second Squale
In 1976 I took up sport diving and got myself a blue Squale 1521 dive watch. It went missing somewhere along the way in the years that followed, but with this year's 50th anniversary I started reminiscing a bit. That's when I discovered that the watch was relaunched a few years ago and is still in production. So there was nothing for it but to get a new one.
This one is better than the original in several ways, including a better movement and bezel. The biggest visual difference is the logo — this new one has a double Squale logo, whereas my old one had HAI at the top. "Squale" comes from squalo, Italian for shark, but why some 1521 versions had HAI on the dial I never did find out — maybe someone else here knows? ("Hai" is the word for shark in German and a few related languages, btw.)
The watch is still a beauty. Heavier and chunkier than I prefer in a wristwatch, but a pleasant reunion all the same.
