I think Pokémon lacks alterntive wincons and comboplay.
Before Pokémon, I have played a digital card game called Legends of Runeterra. It was a very fun game, arguably the best card game ever made but unfortunately, riot couldn’t monetize the PvP so they shut it down more or less.
Since I love creative deck building I wanted to try out Pokémon and use it for creative team building. And though there are a couple of fun team ideas, it’s hard to build your team around a concept like working towards a win condition with your whole team.
What I mean is something like conditional moves and abilities. In Runeterra, there were champion level ups when certain conditions are fulfilled and cards had way more conditional effects. I think Pokemon could benefit from it as well, because right now it seems like type chart and speed are the most importantly aspects of the game, which is interesting, but I feel like it makes team building a bit linear. Instead of being able to come up with completely new teams with many different pokemon, most teams use a lot of the same Pokémon’s and if you try out a new idea, you often only switch one or 2 Pokemon.
Like: the base power of a move increases every time you switch out any Pokémon on your team.
Or an ability: raise your defensive stats each time you target an ally.
Or an ability: Pokémon can not be in the lead at the start of the game, he switches in with the lowest hp stat of your remaining Pokemon and switches in with all stat changes that happened to any Pokemon on the team. (Sounds OP, but perhaps you could balance it out with bad base stats)
