Would it be worth selling my gaming laptop and building a desktop PC instead?
I’m in Australia and currently have an MSI Stealth 16 AI Studio with:
Intel Core Ultra 9 185H
RTX 4080 Laptop GPU, 12GB VRAM
32GB DDR5 RAM
2TB SSD
16-inch 4K Mini-LED display
The laptop is in good overall condition, but the screen has a couple of dead pixels. I’m looking into whether they might be covered under warranty before selling it.
I’m not really gaming much anymore. My main focus now is AI-related development, game development in Godot, programming and general productivity. Because portability is becoming less important, I’m wondering whether I would be better off selling the laptop and using the money to build a desktop with more performance and upgrade ability.
What do you think this laptop would realistically sell for in Australia, both with the dead pixels and if I manage to get the screen repaired?
Would I actually be able to build a noticeably better desktop for the same amount, ideally with more VRAM for AI workloads, or would I be giving up too much value by selling the laptop?
I’d appreciate recommendations on what sort of desktop build I could realistically put together using the sale proceeds.
