Players stop pressing suddenly when near player carrying ball when trying to defend

I've noticed this while playing, a lot of times when trying to press the player carrying the ball (mostly strikers), the game just stops the player with whom I'm pressing (generally my maxed defenders) for a split second. Why is that the case?
