How to navigate a casual situation when I’m anxiously attached?
I know the best move is to end things, but I genuinely can’t bring myself to do it. Every time I try, we end up right back at square one.
I’ve tried ghosting, but he always follows up to check in. At one point he said, "That’s your call if you want to end it," so I said "Alright, cya." A minute later, we were back to sending photos and chatting like normal.
Background on my attachment style:
I recently realized I’m anxiously attached. I have bad anxiety in general, but dating brings it out tenfold.
I once dated a guy who only texted me to make plans—never in between—and I felt zero anxiety. Unfortunately, I wasn't really into him, so it ended.
The current guy: From the start, I knew he wasn't looking for anything serious. I suggested a casual hookup, assuming it would be a one-and-done thing.
Instead of leaving, he stayed for 7 hours. Then he texted me as soon as he left and kept up daily contact for months, showering me with heavy compliments. I naturally got attached to the constant communication.
Recently, he’s been away and busy with work, and my anxiety has spiraled: I'm constantly monitoring his Snapscore and online status. When I see he’s active but not replying to me, I panic. I brought up that the situation was confusing, and he suggested we can pull back if it’s effecting me. When I said, "Okay, if that's what you want," he shifted it back to me: "No, only you can make the decision."
Because I'm so attached, I crumbled and agreed to keep seeing him. But I feel like I'm going insane—literally sick to my stomach from the anxiety. I’ve never felt this unstable in my life.
How do I break this cycle and detach when my anxiety keeps pulling me back in?
