The Classic Computer Games We Played Years Ago and Still Miss Today

I’ve been wanting to write about this for some time and Reddit feels like the right place because I’m sure many of us have similar memories...

I don’t know if it was the games or the time we played them in, but some old computer games still feel special in memory. Back then, playing a game was not as instant as it is today. The computer had to start. The game had to load. Sometimes the system would hang. Sometimes someone else was already playing and we had to wait for our turn. But even that waiting had excitement.

For many of us, gaming started on a shared computer at home, in a school computer lab or at a friend’s place, where one hour felt like ten minutes.

I still remember Road Rash, it was not just a racing game for us. It was chaos, laughter, crashes and that strange satisfaction of kicking another biker off the road. The graphics were simple, but the feeling was not. Every race felt serious. Every fall felt dramatic. And every restart felt necessary. Then there was Dave. That game had such a simple look, but somehow it could hold our full attention. Jumping over enemies, collecting points, climbing ladders, making one wrong move and starting again! It was frustrating, but in a fun way. I still remember that feeling of thinking, “This time I’ll clear the level,” and then failing at almost the same place again.

Games like Prince of Persia, Mario, Contra, Virtual Cop, and Need for Speed had their own memories too. Some were played alone. Some were played with friends standing behind the chair, giving advice as if they were experts. Sometimes the person watching was more excited than the person playing.

That was the fun of it.

Those classic computer games were not polished the way games are today. They did not have huge maps, detailed characters, daily login rewards or long tutorials. Most of the time, we did not even need instructions. We opened the game, pressed a few keys, made mistakes, laughed and slowly figured it out. Maybe that is why we remember them so clearly. They were simple, but they gave us real moments. Fighting over whose turn it was. Asking someone how they crossed a level. Feeling proud after beating a stage. Getting scared when the enemy appeared suddenly. Closing the game quickly when someone older walked into the room.

Today, games are bigger, smoother and easier to access. There are so many options now, and many of them are genuinely good. But those old games still carry a different kind of feeling.

Maybe we don’t only miss Road Rash, Dave, Prince of Persia, or Mario.

Maybe we miss sitting close to the monitor, using the arrow keys with full concentration and feeling like a simple game had become the most exciting thing in the world for those few minutes.

Those games may look old now, but the memories around them still feel fresh.
