Need advice on a weird online order situation

Customer Question

Recently I ordered 7 pizzas for a party through the website. The pizzas were delivered to the party location while I was unavailable, so my wife accepted the order. She wasn't sure how I had paid, so she asked the driver if the order had already been paid for. The driver said yes, so she accepted the pizzas and he left.

The next day, the driver called me saying the order hadn't actually been paid for and claimed he had to cover the cost himself. I was confused and honestly thought it might be a scam at first, but he sounded genuine. I was busy when he called, so I asked him to call me back later. He said the manager would call me after 5 PM instead, and I said that was fine.

A couple of hours later, I checked my email and saw that the order showed as paid online. When I checked my credit card account, the transaction was still pending.

Around 5 PM, the manager called and reiterated that the order hadn't been paid for. I explained that on my end the transaction was still pending, so I wanted to wait a couple of days to make sure it either completed or failed before paying again. The manager said the tip had gone through, but the food charge had not. I was confused about how that could happen. The manager kept reiterating that the driver had to cover the cost of the order, and I felt terrible. The manager then asked me to come to the store and pay in cash.

Here's where I'm stuck. The store is about an hour away because the birthday party was at an event venue, so I really don't want to make a two hour round trip. The manager then suggested having the driver come to my house to collect the payment, but I'm not comfortable giving out my home address in this situation, and I also don't want to make the driver drive all the way to me.

Has anyone dealt with something like this before? What's the best way to handle it? Should I somehow reach out to corporate? I thought about offering to pay electronically if the original transaction ultimately fails, but I'm worried that could create problems if there's no official record. Any advice would be appreciated.
