The breakup only made it official

venting/ranting

When people ask me when my relationship ended, I always say the day we broke up. But if I'm really honest, I think it ended long before that. We was still together, but something between us was already gone.

We still text every day, still go out sometimes, still call each other "babe." But it all started feeling like habit instead of love. We stop talking about our future. We stop fixing problems. It was like both of us know something was wrong, but nobody wanted to say it first.

The strange thing is I cried more before the breakup than after. I think my heart was already grieving while we was still together. By the time we finally ended it, I was mostly crying because I knew there was no way back anymore.

Looking back now, I don't think the breakup destroyed our relationship. I think it only accepted something that already happen many weeks before. That thought still make me sad, but somehow it also help me understand why everything felt so empty near the end.

Did anyone else feel like the real goodbye happened long before the words "we should break up" was ever said?
