Feeling Stuck After 3 Years in a Research Analyst Role Need Career Advice

Ask r/IndiaCareers

I’m looking for some career advice because I’m feeling completely lost right now.
I’ve been working as a Business Analyst at a boutique research and analytics consulting firm for the past three years. However, despite my job title, my work has mostly involved secondary research. I primarily work in Excel and haven’t had the opportunity to use tools like SQL, Power BI, Tableau, Python, etc.

The role has been fully remote, and because of some personal commitments at home, I chose to stay instead of switching jobs. Looking back, I realize my biggest mistake was not using those three years to upskill.

Now the company is steadily losing work, and layoffs seem like a matter of time. I’m panicking because I don’t know what kind of roles I should be targeting or how to make myself employable in today’s market.

I’ve started applying for analyst roles, but most job descriptions require SQL, Power BI, or other technical skills that I don’t have. My experience is much more research-oriented than data analysis, and I’m worried that my profile doesn’t fit what employers are looking for.
To make things worse, I keep hearing that AI is reducing demand for the kind of research work I’ve been doing, which has made me even more anxious about my future.

If you were in my position, where would you start? Which skills would you prioritize in the current job market? What kinds of roles should someone with my background realistically target, and how would you plan to switch as quickly as possible?

I’d really appreciate practical advice from people who’ve been in a similar situation or who are currently hiring in analytics.
