7 Breastfeeding Do’s & Don’ts from an IBCLC
Britney, a nurse, doula, author, and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant with our partners at SimpliFed—shares her tips, do’s, and don’ts for breastfeeding success
#1: Invest in a Quality Pump
Look for: Hospital-strength & multiple levels of customizable suction Want a wearable? Look for: Fully in-bra, no bulky cords or clips, and app-controlled for hands-free flexibility.
#2: Sizing, Bra, and Alignment
- Measure according to the instructions with your pump. Keep in mind you may need inserts.
- Use a stretchy but sung pumping bra
- A centered flange directly over your nipple shouldn’t cause any rubbing or pulling.
#3: Stick to a Schedule
Schedules will vary, but aim for every 2-3 hours, or however often your baby has been nursing. If you miss a session, pump as soon as you're able, then again at your next scheduled session.
#4: Mind Your Supply
- Drink a cup of water during every pumping session. Your urine should be light in color.
- Eat healthy fats & protein to replenish!
#5: Master Your Settings
Pay attention to your pump settings! Experimenting with your suction levels and toggling between modes is essential for optimal milk output.
#6: Get Ahead of Pain & Discomfort
If pumping hurts, try a nipple balm, silver nursing cups, or hot-cold therapy packs. If pain persists, reach out to a lactation consultant for support.
#7: Manage Your Milk Storage
Stock up on food-grade, leak-proof storage bags or a glass breast milk pitcher that you can use to pool your milk. A portable milk cooler also chills milk on the go.
TL;DR: Invest in a pump that actually fits, nail your flange sizing, pump every 2-3 hours, hydrate + eat fat and protein, actually use your pump settings, treat pain early (don't power through it), and store milk smart.
