AITA for not ignoring my ex's break up text?

NTA

It's been a while now, but I still can't get it off my mind.

About 2 months ago, my then girlfriend (21) texted me (also 21), saying she wanted to break up, only to immediately say she regretted it and to ignore the text.

This didn't come out of the blue or anything. Wee'd been having odd conversations about her relationship with a friend of hers on Discord, whom she used to date and would sell nudes to for money.

She would constantly talk about how she still loves him but also loved me and that it hurt to try and choose between us.

Between that and her seeming not to understand why I can't drive an hour away to see her every day when I'm still looking for work. I started to feel like I was less of a person she cared about and more like a side character in her herem novel.

She had gone through a lot of trauma and bad things in life and was constantly talking about how she wanted to cut or kill herself so I felt like if I had broken up with her whatever happened after would be my fault.

When I got the text, I felt relieved and sick to my stomach, I didn't want her to go, but neither of us really seemed happy. So when she said to ignore her text, I said no. She called and texted and got friends, her mother, and even tried calling my mother to try and change my mind (Luckily, my mother believes that adults should handle their own problems), it got so bad that I ended up blocking her and she came to my house.

I feel like what I did was the right thing, but I can't help feeling guilty or that I could have handled it better.

So I ask you, was I the ahole?
