3 branding and copy mistakes I see small businesses make that silently kill sales (and how to fix them)
Most small businesses don't have a product problem—they have an attention and trust problem.
I’ve built two organic distribution engines scaling communities to 260,000+ members ($0 ad spend) and handle growth/brand strategy for client projects. After auditing dozens of small business pages, here are the 3 main friction points causing potential customers to bounce:
1. The "5-Second Decoding" Rule
Modern buyers have a 3-second attention span. If a customer lands on your page and has to spend 5 seconds trying to figure out what you actually sell or do, they leave. Swap technical jargon and fancy corporate slogans for direct, emotional outcomes.
Bad: "Leveraging synergy-driven solutions for modern logistics."
Good: "We deliver your freight 24 hours faster at half the cost."
2. Amateur Visual Trust
Design isn't just about looking pretty; it’s about perceived authority. If your logo looks like a free 2012 template, your typography is inconsistent, or your layout looks messy, buyers subconsciously assume your service quality matches your design quality. High visual polish lets you charge premium prices.
3. Too Much Friction Before Value
If you're asking a new visitor to commit to a 45-minute phone call, fill out a 10-field form, or jump through hoops before showing them what you actually offer, drop-off rates skyrocket. Reduce the steps between their interest and their outcome.
