Should I spend another year strengthening my profile before applying to US Cancer Biology PhD programs?
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some honest advice from people who have gone through the PhD admissions process, particularly for biomedical/cancer biology programs in the US.
My long-term goal is to become a cancer researcher working in translational oncology.
My background:
- Malaysian citizen (Not sure if this is relevant, but I will have a green card in about a year through marriage)
- T10 UK university BSc Biomedical Sciences (UK) – 2:1 honours
- T10 UK university MSc Oncology Research – Distinction (3.9 GPA equivalent)
- One peer-reviewed co-authored publication in a Q1 journal (in circadian biology, not cancer research)
- One oral presentation at a symposium
- Three strong academic references (2 PIs/Postdoc)
- 2 years of cumulative wet lab research experience, including cell biology, mitochondrial biology, extracellular matrix biology, tissue culture, drug assays, microscopy, and molecular biology.
- Two research internships, including one at the Danish Cancer Institute and one at The University of Manchester.
After graduating, I wasn't able to move directly into research. I've been working in a science communication role in the supplement industry while continuing to apply for research assistant positions worldwide. But I have spent time expanding my bioinformatics skills and taking online courses, although I am aware that makes my profile less competitive.
My primary goal is to join a Cancer Biology or Biomedical Sciences PhD program on either the East or West Coast. I'm particularly interested in programs in California, New York, and Boston. Some of the schools I'm targeting include Stanford, UCSF, Rockefeller, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Columbia, Weill Cornell, Albert Einstein, Boston University, Tufts, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, and USC. I have already started narrowing down research groups and PIs to reach out to from these schools that are in alignment with my research experience and interest.
My question is:
If you were reviewing an application like mine, would another year of focused research experience significantly improve my competitiveness, or would you recommend applying now while continuing to build my profile?
I'd really appreciate honest feedback from people who have been through admissions or are currently PhD students. Thanks!
