Did Anyone Else from Desert Storm Develop ALS or Other Serious Illnesses?

Hi everyone! I know this is a long shot, but I'm hoping someone here may have information or a similar experience.
My grandfather served in the U.S. Navy from 1981–2004 and was deployed during Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf in 1991. Shortly after retiring in 2004, he was diagnosed with ALS. Today, he can only move his eyes.
My grandmother told me there were thousands of sailors aboard his ship, and years later many of them reportedly developed ALS, cancer, or other serious illnesses.
Did you, a family member, or someone you know serve during that time and experience something similar? I'd really appreciate hearing any stories or information you may have.
