Question about cross-examination

Yesterday I was playing against venom with daredevil, which brought up some questions about his attack card ‘cross-examination’. When the bell is on its ringing side all damage venom takes is +1. Cross-examination does 3 damage to an enemy and deals 1 additional damage to that enemy for each upgrade it has attached to it. Let’s say that venom has 2 upgrades attached to him and the bell is ringing, does that mean that this event does 5 (3+2) damage or 7 (3 + 2x2)? I would think it’s the latter, but I’m not sure.

I also don’t think the retaliate on venom (or his vengeance) triggers multiple times when using cross-examination, but not sure of this as well.
