Have handheld gaming consoles become a bit too homogenized these days?

General Discussion

I’ve recently been looking back at the history of handheld gaming consoles and was struck by the sheer diversity of the Atari, Sega, and SNK eras—each company’s devices had such distinct characteristics. Yet, in today’s market—aside from Windows-based handhelds and retro-style devices—Nintendo seems to be the only original handheld manufacturer left standing. To me, however, the retro handheld market suffers from severe homogenization; they all look exactly the same. That makes me wonder: does the current handheld market need a dose of creativity or some fresh ideas? I’m a huge handheld gaming enthusiast and would love to have a friendly discussion about this.
