Should I pursue a PhD in India, or rethink my career path?

Education & Career :ed:

I graduated with a B.Sc. in Zoology this year. I missed the application deadlines for the central university M.Sc. entrance exams, so I've taken a gap year to prepare for the next admission cycle.

Lately, I've been questioning whether a PhD is worth it in the long run. Initially, my plan was to do an M.Sc., then a PhD, and eventually become a college lecturer or assistant professor. But after reading and hearing about the reality of doing a PhD in India, I'm feeling conflicted.

From what I've seen, many PhD scholars seem overworked, underpaid, and stuck in the system for years. The stipend (around ₹30,000–₹40,000 in many places) doesn't seem like much when you're spending 5–6 years in an increasingly expensive economy. It makes me wonder if the opportunity cost is too high.

I genuinely enjoy biology and academics, but I also want financial stability and a decent quality of life. I'm not chasing luxury, but I don't want to spend most of my twenties struggling financially if there are better alternatives.

For those who have done a PhD or are currently pursuing one:

Was it worth it?

Would you choose the same path again?

If your goal is to become a lecturer, is a PhD still the best investment?

Are there other career paths in life sciences that offer a better balance between salary, job satisfaction, and long-term growth?

I'd really appreciate honest advice, especially from people who have experienced the Indian academic system firsthand.
