10 Things I Always Do After Deploying a Fresh Ubuntu VPS. Anything I'm Missing?
I've been working with VPS deployments more frequently lately, and I realized I follow almost the same setup process every time before hosting any application.
Here's my current checklist:
- ✅ Update the system (
apt update && apt upgrade) - ✅ Create a non-root user with sudo privileges
- ✅ Configure SSH key authentication
- ✅ Disable root login and password authentication
- ✅ Enable UFW and allow only the required ports
- ✅ Install Docker & Docker Compose
- ✅ Enable automatic security updates
- ✅ Install Fail2Ban to protect SSH
- ✅ Configure swap (if the VPS has limited RAM)
- ✅ Set up monitoring and backups
