New cat not grooming properly

I’ve just adopted a new cat. He is three years old, the problem is he stinks all the time. He grooms himself, I just don’t think he is doing a very good job. After using the litter tray he smells and leaves little poop stains on fabrics. I have ordered some cat wipes, was just wondering if there was anything else that I could do?
