Hey Community From cold DMs to steady clients how I built a freelance service business without a portfolio

Freelancer

Wanted to share something that might help others starting out with nothing but time and hustle.

I started with zero portfolio, no case studies, no fancy website. Just knowledge of a few in-demand skills web development, ads management, and automation. What I didn't have in proof, I made up for in how I approached people.

Instead of pitching "I can build you a website" like everyone else, I started asking sharp, specific questions about their actual problem before saying anything about myself. Turns out most freelancers jump straight to selling clients notice when someone actually understands their situation first.

The biggest shift happened when I stopped chasing every lead and started being selective. Not every inquiry is worth your time some have unrealistic budgets, some just want free advice, some aren't even real clients (other freelancers posting in disguise). Learning to spot those early saved me hours every week.

Slowly, one project turned into a recurring client, a recurring client turned into referrals, and referrals turned into an actual pipeline.

Still early days, but the lesson that stuck with me you don't need to be the most experienced person in the room, you just need to genuinely understand the client's problem better than the next guy pitching them.

Happy to answer questions if anyone's starting out and feeling stuck.
