iPad + Magic Keyboard + Wispr Flow (or any dictation app) — the workaround everyone says is impossible
Every answer online says you can't use a voice-dictation app on iPad once a Magic Keyboard is attached — the on-screen keyboard disappears and takes the mic button with it. Turns out you can, using iOS Voice Control. Here's the exact flow:
ONE-TIME SETUP
- Set up your dictation app (Wispr Flow, etc.) and confirm it works on the iPad with no keyboard attached.
- Settings → Accessibility → Voice Control → On.
- Attach the Magic Keyboard.
EACH TIME YOU WANT TO DICTATE
- Go to the screen with the text field you want to type into.
- Say "Start listening" — Voice Control overlays a number on every field/button on screen.
- Find your text field's number and say it (e.g., "9") to drop the cursor into that field.
- With the cursor showing, say "Show keyboard" — the on-screen keyboard pops up, bringing your dictation mic back.
- Say "Stop listening" before you dictate, so Voice Control doesn't fight your dictation app.
- Dictate as normal.
The whole trick is "Show keyboard" — it forces the on-screen keyboard up even with the hardware keyboard docked. The easy-to-miss step is selecting the text field by its number first.
Tip: keep Voice Control off on your iPhone (and remove it from the Accessibility Shortcut) so it only runs on the iPad.
