Diablo 4: My thoughts on this game

State of the Game · Discussions

So I have been playing Diablo 4 since beta. Played most seasons, skipped a few. Here is my thought on this game.

I find this game at its most enjoyable state when you just started a new character. I really predicate how you can reassign the skill points at any time, so I can test out all the builds quickly and easily.

Take Spiritborn, for example. I chose a basic attack, and I see my character killing some goons. good, but could be better. I picked up new gears, with bigger numbers, and that pleased me. Then I unlocked some core skills, and my damage goes way up with these new skills. The new skill consumes mana, however, so I started paying attention to gears that can either reduce mana cost, or help mana regen. Things started to look good. As I found more better gear, I could do more core attack.

I noticed that sometimes my hp goes down by a large chunk, though, so every once a while a gear dropped that gave me hp boost. That made me happy. Then I found some amulets and boots that gave me extra speed. Excellent. Each drop filled me with excitement and anticipation, because these changes are meaningful. I can see clearly how my character becomes stronger, faster, hitting harder. I feel the monsters are also getting stronger, but I seem to be able to be a step ahead.

By the time I reached 70 and the monsters seem to have stopped growing in difficulty. The paragon points made me feel like a god. I could then experiment with new builds without worrying about dying. This is when I realized that the game is essentially in its optimal state.

If I were to increase the difficulty, then the monsters will become stronger. but more powerful gears will drop... to make my numbers go up. And when the numbers go up, I could increase the difficulty again, and maybe to get a higher chance for some unique or Mythics to drop, which would give me... bigger numbers.

But why would I want bigger numbers? Every single difficulty level increase would just produce the same result: Me using my skills smash the monsters to pieces. If I enjoy using my skills to kill the monsters in all kinds of different ways, I can do it right here, at the normal / hard difficulty. There is zero reason to get bigger numbers to fight monsters that have more hp and hit harder, because eventually I'd get more powerful gear and do what I have been doing already.

It would make sense for me to, after testing all the builds, to just try a new class and start over with the excitement of loop drop. And by the time I went through all the different classes, a lot of time would have passed and I'd have got my money's worth.

All that struggle for Mythic crafting, Mythic farming with laid bosses and undercity runs, reading guides online trying to get the best build... all felt like chasing after something that you could already easily have if you just stay at normal/hard difficulty: smashing monsters to bits.

Overall, I think pretending higher difficulty don't exist and ignoring seasonal objectives is like the best way for me to fully enjoy this game, because I feel like I'm not really missing out much and it saved my mind from a lot of frustration.
