Does anyone else struggle with regressing into themselves when their partner is going through PMDD?

Does anybody else find themselves kind of regressing into themselves when their partner is going through that time of the month?

I feel like, as a defence mechanism, I retreat into myself for comfort and protection. When I say “regressing”, I mean I just completely zone out and disconnect from everything.

I’ll stay on my phone for hours, scrolling or watching things, but afterwards I can barely tell you what I’ve been watching or what I’ve even been doing. It all just becomes a blur.

I feel like I completely disconnect from life and retreat into my own little world.

The problem is that my partner then gets upset because I’m not really present for her. She’ll notice that I’m not listening properly, not hearing what she’s saying, or forgetting things she’s asked me to do. I can understand why that would hurt her, but in those moments I feel like I’m almost shutting down as a way to protect myself from everything that’s happening.

I don’t want to be disconnected from her, and I don’t want her to feel like I’m abandoning her when she’s struggling. But I also find myself feeling overwhelmed and retreating into myself without really consciously choosing to do it.
Does anyone else experience this as a partner of someone with PMDD? Do you also find yourself shutting down, zoning out, or emotionally regressing when things get intense? I’d really like to know if I’m the only one who reacts this way.
