AITA for correcting my uncle in front of his entire dinner table when he stated something as fact that was completely wrong?
Some background. My uncle Raymond is the kind of person who speaks with absolute authority on every subject regardless of whether he actually knows anything about it. Family gatherings have always involved him holding court at the dinner table while everyone nods along because nobody wants the confrontation.
Last Sunday we had a family lunch, about twelve people around the table. My uncle started talking about nutrition and stated very confidently that the liver filters out toxins and stores them in the body permanently and that is why you should never eat organ meat. He said this like it was established medical fact and two of my aunts immediately started agreeing and saying they had always suspected this.
I am not a doctor but I did study biology and I know this is not remotely how the liver works. The liver processes and eliminates toxins, it does not store them. It is actually one of the most nutrient dense foods you can eat.
I corrected him. Calmly and directly. I said that was actually not how the liver functioned and briefly explained why.
The table went very quiet.
My uncle did not respond to the correction itself, he just changed the subject. After lunch my mom pulled me aside and said I had embarrassed him in front of everyone and that I should have just let it go or told him privately afterward.
My argument is that two aunts were sitting there about to change their diet based on completely incorrect information he presented as fact.
AITA for saying something?
