Can I get a quant developer job coming from 3rd world country
Hey everyone,
I’m starting my 3rd year of Software Engineering at a university in Central Asia (with a curriculum partnered with a top German tech university). My goal is to break into Quant Development or Low-Latency C++ roles, but coming from a non-target region, I want to get a reality check on my background and see what I need to fix.
A bit about where I stand right now:
- Work Experience: I'm currently interning as a C++ CAD software developer (transitioning to Junior soon). I work with modern C++, STL/Boost, memory management, computational geometry, and Linux. Before this, I did some freelance frontend dev work (JS/React).
- Coursework: Done with Linear Algebra, Calc 1 & 2, Probability & Stats, Discrete Math, and basic DSA. Over the next two years, I'll be taking Operating Systems, Advanced Algorithms, Computer Networks, and ML.
- Gaps: I don't have any finance or quant-specific projects on my resume yet.
I'm more than willing to put in the time to build projects and study, but I'm feeling a bit uncertain about whether my resume will just get auto-rejected because of my location and lack of quant projects.
A few things I'd love your advice on:
- Is direct entry into international HFT/Quant firms realistic from a non-target country, or is doing a Master's abroad practically mandatory for visa/screening reasons?
- How can I best leverage my C++ CAD / geometry background for Quant Dev? What kind of low-latency or C++ projects would actually carry weight on a resume?
- What should I prioritize right now alongside uni (e.g., C++ template metaprogramming, OS/Networking internals, LeetCode)?
Appreciate any honest feedback and guidance!
