Got dumped by the woman I thought I'd die with. Where did I go wrong?
Met a wonderful woman at the beginning of the year in a new job after having a rough end of year last year.
She was always hitting on me but I never really gave in cause I didn't want to feel but slowly I started to loosen up and start flirting back and slowly but surely we started to bond and become closer.
We started making out after work and would talk about everything during the nights. One day I decided to invite her out to a town event with concerts after work and we decided to get to know each other.
On June 2nd I asked her to be my girlfriend. I'll never forget how happy I was walking back home after leaving her at her house at the end of the night. It felt like I had finally found that happiness that was ever so elusive and my cold heart started melting and feeling again. Six years of no relationship and just keeping to myself, and I finally felt alive, loved and appreciated again. We went kinda fast, soon after she became independent I found myself staying every night with her because she always asked me to stay. Not too long after she asked if I wanted to move in, to which I agreed.
In hindsight it was not smart at all but everything felt so right I couldn't fight the feeling of just wanting to spend my days with her and share every moment we could together. She would tell me I'm the man she always wished for and how she wouldn't let me go and that she wanted her life with me.
I always did things for her because it kinda just flowed, never expecting anything in return.
One month into the relationship and things were becoming rocky when we went out with friends, I had my flaws and I'm not going to say I did everything perfectly but I tried my best at every given time. Sometimes I couldn't enjoy myself fully because I've been going through a rough phase of not having things where I want them to be since I was fired without a probable cause and left with no income, but I had my savings. She was supportive all the way and even helped me with the process of seeking compensation for the unfair dismissal and finding a new job.
Slowly the days became too chill, I felt like I was being taken for granted because she got too comfortable around me and I felt like since she had me and was fine with how things were she didn't keep putting effort into "knowing each other". It almost felt like we were a married couple for years even though it hasn't even been two months. She would wake up, give me a kiss and a hug and be on her phone for some hours before going to work, where on the bus she would start engaging in conversation which is something I didn't understand at all since when we were in the same space she didn't engage with me.
All I wanted was for us to keep flirting with each other and getting to know one another, given our story was barely starting. I would tell her the things I would want to do with her, but it mostly felt like things flowed when it was a convenience, not when we both put effort into it. She mostly seemed disconnected at times, during the morning I would try to be interactive and set a good tone for the day before she had to do her daily activities and so did I. At this point she was almost always on her phone just scrolling and scrolling.
According to her everything she did was wrong in my eyes, when really I just wanted to protect her and try to help her get set on her path to becoming a nurse which is her dream job. Even without a job and her with low cash I pulled out my savings, would cook and do most of the house work and lift her spirits up when she came back from work. I was always attentive when she was around because I appreciated and valued her that much, even though I had other things in the background I was working on.
Last night she told me that we are done. That she doesn't want to feel the pressure of the relationship, even though I always tried to talk things out and see if we could meet in the middle, even in the times when she hurt me. She asked me for the keys knowing fully well I'm low on cash, the job I landed starts on Friday and I won't have a paycheck until next month and that I have nowhere to go.
I accepted and respected her decision and I'm going to get my things today so that she can be free as she wishes, moving back in with my old roommate for two months before he himself moves to a different province to pursue his new career. She called me at 4am after I couldn't sleep in the apartment and came to my old roommate's place for a man to man talk about the situation cause I could really use an ear.
She admitted she was taking me for granted, she also mentioned that she is not even entirely sure about her decision being the right one and that she is stunned, confused and scared. The most probable thing is that she will call me in the afternoon to talk things further, or maybe not. I'm not sure.
I'm devastated, but I don't regret anything because this allowed me to feel again, and for that I am happy. I may have made mistakes but I never did anything out of malice or with hidden intentions. I just wanted to keep getting to know her and to keep finding things that make me fall in love more.
Where did I go wrong? We had a couple of rough nights out, but I feel like most were taken out of context since she doesn't really know how to drink. I understand that we are at different life stages, just always thought we could make it work out.
I'm 27(M) she is 21(F)
Thank you for reading. I just needed to get this off my chest.
