34F, 37M, 8 weeks pregnant. Is this just another adjustment period or am I ignoring red flags?
My boyfriend (37M) and I (34F) have been together for almost 6 years. We’ve had our ups and downs, and we’ve worked really hard on our relationship. Part of the challenge is that we come from completely different cultures and have very different personalities.
I’m Latina, very outgoing, expressive, proactive, and I naturally take charge of things. He’s Balkan, very introverted, quiet, and not particularly expressive. We’ve had to learn how to understand each other over the years.
About a year ago we moved in together, and I had almost the exact same emotional reaction I’m having now.
I completely freaked out because I felt like everything fell on me. I was the one who found the apartment, organized the move, furnished it, decorated it, unpacked, and basically created our home. It took months before we found a rhythm where he started contributing more consistently. Even now, I still carry most of the mental load and most of the household responsibilities.
Six months ago we decided we wanted a baby. It took us about six months to conceive, and we’re genuinely excited. We’ve already told most of our family and close friends.
But now that I’m 8 weeks pregnant, I’m spiraling again.
I’m exhausted all the time. I’m nauseous constantly. Some days I can barely function. And instead of feeling like we’re becoming a team, I feel like I’m watching the house slowly fall apart because I’m no longer physically capable of doing everything I usually do.
He’ll help if I specifically ask him to, but I hate feeling like I have to manage another adult. I don’t want to assign every single task, remind him what needs to be done, or explain why maybe the overflowing laundry basket or dirty kitchen should be handled without me saying something.
Lately I find myself feeling irritated almost every time I look at him. He seems so relaxed while I’m overwhelmed. He doesn’t seem to notice things the way I do, and it makes me feel like I’m going to end up carrying not only the pregnancy but also the entire household and eventually the parenting.
The worst part is that I can’t tell whether this is just another major life transition—like when we first moved in together—and we simply need time to adapt to our new roles… or if this is actually showing me what life with him as a father is going to look like.
Has anyone gone through something similar? Did your partner step up once the pregnancy became more real, or is this the kind of dynamic that usually doesn’t change? I’m struggling to figure out whether my hormones are amplifying everything or whether I’m seeing something I’ve been minimizing for years.
