I stopped telling people I was working on a novel and something unexpected happened to the writing itself

[Discussion]

Had been mentioning it casually for about two years. Someone asks what you are up to, you say you are working on a novel, they ask what it is about, you give the summary, they say that sounds interesting. Felt like a normal part of having a creative project.

Did not notice what it was costing until I stopped.

Stopped mentioning it partly out of embarrassment that two years had passed with nothing finished and partly because I was tired of updating people on something that never seemed to move. Just stopped bringing it up.

The next few months the writing changed in a way I could not immediately explain. Sessions felt less like performing progress and more like actually working. The story stopped needing to sound interesting when summarized and started just needing to be what it was on the page. Characters made choices that would be hard to explain to someone asking what the book was about and I let them make those choices anyway.

I think what happened is that talking about the project had been quietly feeding something that the writing itself was supposed to feed. The conversation gave me a version of the feeling without requiring me to actually do the thing and I had not noticed the substitution because it felt like enthusiasm.

The novel exists now in a way it did not two years ago. Not finished but real in a way that feels different from before.

Not saying never talk about your work. Just that the talking and the writing might be drawing from the same source and it is worth knowing which one you are feeding on any given day.
