Manchester by the Sea didn't make me sad.
this movie was called one of the devastating films of the 21st century. but I can't see it. it portrays depression extremely well i feel, and a lot of the goals it tries to achieve with that are perfectly achieved.
now, i'm not sure if this is something wrong with me, or perhaps others feel this way, but I was not sad through the movie. I watched it, I know the story, I get the ending, but I don't feel sad, like at all.
I have struggled with depression for a long time, and at points I have harmed myself, and I feel this movie portrays depression extremely well like I've said. which is why it's strange to me that I felt nothing watching this.
I have heard stories of people saying it really changed them, how it made them devastated for days, how it made them really think about their illness. but i felt nothing.
I was curious if anyone else had my point of view when watching this movie, or if I am different.
at the end of the movie, shocked by my lack of emotion, I did some research about the movie, as well as actually thought about my life, my past, and my future to see if something i had was different as to why i felt nothing. but i couldn't figure anything out. I suppose in some way I felt melancholic while thinking about myself, but it had nothing to do with the film, that was just my personal life. Is that the point of the movie? was I supposed to think about my life during the film to make me feel worse.
I have read books that really make me sorrowful, and some shows and movies have too, it's not foreign to me to feel anguished and sad. That's usually why I watch, read, or listen to these types of media. I enjoy feeling terrible. But this didn't do it for me like it did so many others, why?
P.S. sorry, i gave a lot of irrelevant details but it really makes me unsure
