[Concept] A Tiered Zombie Hierarchy on a Sci-Fi Mega-Planet (Common vs. Rare Element-Users

Lore

Hey everyone! I’m working on a sci-fi world-building project set on a mega-planet (150x the size of Earth) that has been overrun by a massive zombie outbreak. Instead of having just one type of mindless horde, I wanted a tiered system with logical limitations.

Here is how the hierarchy works. I’d love to hear your thoughts or constructive feedback!

  1. The Numbers & Scale

The Hordes (Trillions): Standard, slow, mindless zombies. They make up the vast majority. Terrifying in sheer numbers, but easy to deal with individually.

The Fast Swarm (Billions): Faster, more aggressive units, but still lacking tactical intelligence.

The Rare Element-Users (Hundreds of Millions): The wildcards. They have basic human-level cunning (70-80 IQ) and can use elements (fire, acid, water, rock) within a strict 10-meter range.

  1. The Mechanics: Finite Energy Pools

To keep things balanced and prevent them from being overpowered, I introduced an Energy Reserve System:

A rare element zomboid has a strict limit—around 340 energy units.

Every time they cast an element (e.g., throwing a rock or blasting acid to block bullets), it costs 50 to 100 units.

This means they can't spam powers endlessly. Once their energy is depleted, they lose their elemental shield and become vulnerable.

  1. Why This Matters

In a city environment, even a single one of these rare units can cause massive local chaos because they can hide, set up ambushes, and neutralize standard law enforcement fire with their elemental defense. However, high-tier forces or heavy hitters can easily overwhelm them once their energy runs out.

Question for you guys: How does this scaling sound for a sci-fi survival setting? Are finite energy pools a good way to keep tiered monsters balanced? Let me know!
