Ask five people what VPN stands for and at least two will pause, then guess wrong.

It's Virtual Private Network.

"Virtual" because there's no physical dedicated wire running from your house to wherever you're connecting, it's built on top of the regular internet using tunneling protocols.

"Private" because the connection is encrypted, typically with AES-256, so even though it's riding on the shared public internet, nobody else can read what's inside it.

"Network" because you're not just hiding, you're joining a different network entirely, one that has its own IP address and its own apparent location, usually one of hundreds of possible server locations a provider maintains.

So the "virtual" part is a tunnel built through the same internet everyone else uses, just locked so only you and the server on the other end can see inside it.

Next time someone asks, you've got the one-line version: virtual because it's not a real wire, private because it's encrypted, network because you're borrowing someone else's identity on the internet for a while.
