Insane Universe Chapter Eight: Charlotte "Clay" Cooper
The world was still struggling to understand the Catalyst.
Some people welcomed peaceful super mutants.
Others feared them.
Organizations like the Humanity First Movement held rallies demanding stricter enforcement of the Super Mutant Reinforcement Act, arguing that every new mutation represented another threat to ordinary people.
Charles Xavier often watched these broadcasts in silence.
Storm sighed.
"Fear keeps spreading."
Charles answered quietly,
"Then we must keep spreading compassion."
Far away from Kauai...
A young girl who had never wanted to hurt anyone was about to discover that kindness could sometimes be met with rejection.
A Quiet Artist
In a peaceful Chicago suburb lived a twelve-year-old girl named Charlotte Cooper.
Most people simply called her Charlie.
Charlotte was born deaf.
From the time she was little, she communicated primarily through American Sign Language (ASL), facial expressions, and writing.
She was also autistic.
She found comfort in routines.
Unexpected changes overwhelmed her.
Crowded places exhausted her.
But one thing always helped.
Clay.
Every afternoon after school she sat quietly at a small table covered in colorful modeling clay.
She smiled as she carefully sculpted tiny animals.
Birds.
Foxes.
Trees.
Flowers.
Entire miniature forests.
Her imagination seemed endless.
School
During art class, Mrs. Harrison smiled warmly.
She signed,
"Your fox looks wonderful."
Charlotte smiled shyly before signing back,
"Thank you."
Art was the one class where she felt understood.
She rarely spoke.
She rarely looked people directly in the eyes.
But when her hands shaped clay...
she expressed everything she couldn't easily say.
Unfortunately...
not everyone appreciated her.
Different
Several students gathered across the room.
One boy whispered,
"She's weird."
Another shrugged.
"She doesn't even talk."
A girl wearing a bracelet supporting the Humanity First Movement looked toward Charlotte.
"My parents said super mutants are ruining everything."
"They say anyone different should be watched."
Charlotte couldn't hear the words.
But she noticed the looks.
The pointing.
The laughter.
She quietly lowered her head and returned to sculpting.
Mrs. Harrison gently walked over.
She signed,
"Don't let them stop you from creating."
Charlotte nodded.
Home
Charlotte's parents were wealthy professionals whose careers often kept them away from home.
Most of Charlotte's daily care came from two kind nannies.
Maria Alvarez helped with homework.
Grace Kim practiced sign language with her every evening.
Grace smiled while signing,
"Your science test was perfect."
Charlotte proudly showed a score of 100%.
Maria laughed.
"You may not like talking..."
"But your brain never stops working."
Charlotte smiled.
For a little while...
everything felt safe.
One Wish
That evening Charlotte finished another sculpture.
It looked like a soaring eagle.
She gently touched it.
Then she wrote in her sketchbook.
She closed the notebook.
Outside...
a familiar blue light crossed the sky.
The Catalyst
The glowing stream passed silently through the roof.
It surrounded Charlotte's room.
Blue energy wrapped gently around her.
She looked upward in surprise.
The room filled with brilliant light.
Her body suddenly felt warm.
She tried to stand.
Instead...
She collapsed.
Her skin softened.
Her arms flattened.
Her body melted into smooth brown clay.
The room became silent.
Minutes later...
The clay slowly rippled.
Hands formed.
Feet emerged.
A face appeared.
Charlotte stood again.
She looked at her own hands.
They stretched like soft rubber before returning to normal.
She quickly picked up a small notebook and wrote.
A Clever Escape
Footsteps echoed in the hallway.
Maria signed through the door.
"Charlotte? Are you alright?"
Charlotte looked around the room.
Without thinking...
Her body flowed like liquid clay.
She reshaped herself into a comfortable chair beside her bed.
She quickly molded another portion of herself into what looked like a sleeping figure beneath the blankets.
A pillow completed the illusion.
The bedroom door opened.
Maria smiled.
"She's asleep."
Grace nodded quietly.
"Let's not wake her."
They gently closed the door.
The instant they left...
The chair rippled.
Charlotte stepped back into her normal shape.
Her heart raced.
"What am I?" she signed to herself.
Leaving Home
Charlotte looked out her second-story bedroom window.
She knew she couldn't explain what had happened.
She carefully climbed onto the windowsill.
Then jumped.
Instead of crashing into the ground...
Her body flattened into a soft cushion of clay before bouncing safely back to normal.
She stared in amazement.
She could not only survive the fall—
She could reshape herself into almost anything.
Clay
Over the following days Charlotte hid throughout the city.
She discovered more abilities.
She could stretch through tiny openings.
She could flatten beneath doors.
She could reshape herself into simple objects.
She could survive heavy rain without dissolving.
Fire left no lasting damage.
Even freezing temperatures barely slowed her.
Whenever she became frightened, she instinctively changed into ordinary things—a bench, a backpack, a traffic cone—until danger passed.
People began whispering about a mysterious figure who seemed able to become anything.
Soon the streets gave her a nickname.
Clay.
Rejection
Eventually Charlotte's parents learned the truth.
They confronted her.
Her father stared at her with disbelief.
"So it's true."
"You're one of them."
Charlotte desperately signed,
"I'm still me."
Her mother looked away.
"The newspapers already know."
"We can't have this attached to our family."
Charlotte's hands trembled.
"Please..."
"I didn't choose this."
Her father slowly opened the front door.
"You need to leave."
Charlotte looked from one parent to the other.
Neither moved.
Neither signed goodbye.
She picked up her backpack.
Then quietly walked away.
Alone
For several weeks Charlotte slept beneath bridges, inside abandoned buildings, and wherever she could safely hide.
She often became a stone statue during the day to avoid being noticed.
At night she molded herself into blankets to stay warm.
Despite everything...
She continued sculpting small clay animals whenever she found discarded modeling clay.
It reminded her who she was.
Charles Finds Clay
One afternoon Charlotte sat alone in a quiet park, shaping a tiny turtle from a piece of blue clay.
A gentle voice spoke behind her.
"You have remarkable hands."
She turned.
Professor Charles Xavier sat nearby in his hovering chair.
Storm, Beast, Risk, Dominion, and several young mutants stood with him.
Charles smiled kindly.
"My name is Charles Xavier."
Charlotte cautiously signed,
"You know sign language?"
Charles smiled and answered in ASL.
"I wanted to greet you in the language most natural to you."
Charlotte looked surprised.
"You're not afraid?"
Charles shook his head.
"No."
"I'm proud to meet you."
Tears formed in Charlotte's eyes.
She signed slowly.
"My parents don't want me anymore."
Charles replied,
"Then let us become your family."
A New Home
The Super X-Jet carried Charlotte across the Pacific Ocean to Kauai.
As the floating Super X-Mansion came into view, Charlotte pressed her hands against the window.
The island below shimmered with forests, waterfalls, and gardens.
Peril's silver-and-emerald tree stood at the center of the grounds.
Dominion smiled.
"Welcome home."
Charlotte hesitated before signing,
"Home?"
Risk nodded warmly.
"Yes."
"No one here has to hide who they are."
Training
Inside the training halls, Charlotte explored her abilities.
She could become a towering clay giant.
She could flatten into a paper-thin sheet.
She formed bridges, shields, ladders, and protective walls.
She stretched her arms across entire rooms to rescue teammates.
Beast watched in amazement.
"Her body has no fixed biological structure."
Risk smiled.
"She's limited only by her imagination."
Charlotte grinned and quickly reshaped herself into a playful clay dragon, making several younger mutants laugh.
A Gift Beyond Herself
One afternoon Peril's tree rustled gently as Charlotte placed her clay hand against its silver trunk.
Instead of simply touching it, part of her body flowed into the roots.
Green light spread through the branches.
The tree grew taller.
Flowers blossomed.
Birds gathered overhead.
Charlotte stepped back in surprise.
Risk's eyes widened.
"You strengthened it."
Beast scanned the tree.
"Incredible."
"Her mutation doesn't merely imitate objects."
"It can temporarily merge with living organisms, reinforcing their natural abilities without changing who they are."
Later, Charlotte experimented carefully under supervision.
She merged briefly with a young sapling, helping it grow into a sturdy tree.
She touched a recovering sea turtle at the island's wildlife sanctuary, giving it the strength to swim again after treatment.
Storm smiled.
"You don't just reshape yourself."
"You help life become stronger."
Charlotte looked toward the ocean and signed softly,
"I want to protect things that can't protect themselves."
Charles smiled with quiet pride.
"That," he said, "is exactly the kind of hero this world needs."
As the sun set over Kauai, Charlotte sat beneath Peril's tree with a small block of modeling clay in her hands. She carefully sculpted a tiny house surrounded by trees and smiling people.
Dominion looked over her shoulder.
"What's that?"
Charlotte smiled and signed,
"My family."
Around her sat the Super X-Men, Risk, Dominion, and the other young mutants. For the first time since her life had changed, Charlotte no longer imagined what home might look like.
She had found it.
