Transitioning from Industrial Sales to Engineering

Jobs/Careers

Good morning,

I currently work as an industrial outside salesman but I have been considering getting an electrical engineering degree and pursuing that instead. Most of the people I've asked about it are moving the opposite direction claiming that they didn't like engineering, I've met very few people trying to make the same move as me. Most of the complaints I hear about engineering revolve around working in CAD all day behind a desk but that sounds great to me. I'm tired of the hunting aspect of sales; I would be okay troubleshooting all day but trying to find new business is no longer enjoyable. I don't mind working with customers over the phone if they call in though I would rather just work with myself and colleagues.

  • As an electrical engineer, what is your roll and title?
  • What are the things you like and dislike about being an engineer?
  • What do you spend most of your day doing?
  • I'd really like to get into R&D in someway, is this feasible? What does the timeline look like for such a career placement?
  • What kind of doors does a masters or doctorate open versus just a bachelor's in engineering?
