How to small talk

I Can't Dance

I (M 21) think is is one of the important skills in life one has to be familiar at. I myself have been very awkward with when trying to small talk with other people and acquaintances, more often that not because my brain only entertains deep and provoking conversations rather that shallow, smooth superficial dialogues. I have recently graduated and I think that this is a skill that would be useful in my career, specifically when building relationships with colleagues and with the work environment. I find myself often being met with silence or when people don't follow through with my small talk which leaves me in a consistent feeling of awkwardness in my position. I know I am doing something wrong. I looked up on how to small talk and that involves with something that could spark the person's interest or something that I'd like to share about my day but I don't want to give off to people that they barely know me so why would I be interested. I don't want to be prodding. I don't want to have small talk where it is forced and unwelcomed at. I also don't want to share something about my life, only until that if I feel safe with the relationship that it feels natural to share when I've spent enough time with said person. I know its weird that I want to have small talk but without expressing too much interest and self sharing, is it possible?
