Help me narrow down which lizard species would suit me best
I saw a similar post, so I figured I’d ask as well since I’m looking for a lizard that will likely be my only lizard for a long time. I’d appreciate advice from people with experience or knowledge who can help me narrow down the species I’m interested in based on what I’m looking for.
I’m interested in:
- Ctenosaura species
- Fiji banded iguanas
- Emerald tree monitors
- Mangrove/Quince/Peachthroat monitors
- Sailfin lizards
- Basilisks
- I'm open to suggestions but read the whole post before recommending me something please :)
What I’m looking for:
- I can provide a good-sized enclosure, but preferably no more than around 120-150 cm deep or 200 cm tall. I could probably do 200–350 cm in length if necessary, but anything over 350 cm would be too large for what I want
- Most importantly, I don’t want a lizard that hides all the time. I’d like to be able to watch it either relaxing or being active.
- Arboreal / semi aquatic seems to fit me the most but i don't mind terrestrial aslong as they are not constantly hidden.
- I like water features, but they aren’t essential.
- Regular handling isn’t important. I’d prefer an animal that can tolerate handling when necessary but is also perfectly comfortable and thrives without it.
- I like that medium sized, dinosaur like reptile appearance.
- I'm a big fan of larger water monitors in terms of appearance and behavior for what it's worth
Some extra information: I’ve never owned a lizard, but I grew up keeping snakes, so I’m not completely new to reptiles. I’ve also researched all of these species quite a bit and will do much more once I’ve narrowed down my options.
I’d say I’m more interested in monitors, but species from the indicus complex are a bit harder to find where I live. I’ve also been somewhat put off by a lot of the information I’ve seen about tree monitors. Clint’s video especially made it sound like they can decline and die much more easily than most other lizards. Kimberley rock monitors and Mertens’ water monitors have been recommended to me before, and while they seem to tick many of the right boxes, they just don’t have the kind of monitor look that interests me.
