What if we measured AI by the value it creates for society rather than the technology itself?

One of the core ideas behind Public Informatics is the concept of public good and public value. Much of today's conversation around AI focuses on what technology can do. Public Informatics shifts the conversation to what technology should do and whether it creates meaningful benefits for people and communities.

Instead of measuring success solely through technological advancement or economic impact, it asks whether AI, data, and analytics can improve public services, support healthier and safer communities, strengthen decision-making, and enhance quality of life.

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into government, healthcare, education, and other public sectors, this perspective encourages us to think beyond innovation and consider the broader impact technology has on society.
