I miss old school MTG
So, I never post on or even go into any MTG subs, yet the reddit algo magically served this one to me and I'm glad it did. Looking through the posts made me nostalgic and I hope you'll indulge me in some reminisces.
I started playing Magic in the mid 90s in high school, I have fond memories of riding my bike downtown to the comic/card shop with friends, buying booster packs of Revised for $2.50 and starters for (I think) 5 bucks. The Dark was the current expansion pack at the time, so I bought a lot of those (though one of my local shops also had packs of Legends for like 6 or 7 bucks, wish I could go back in time and buy a few boxes of that!)
Since we just had to work with whatever we got in packs, the games were fun and actually lasted a long time. We played cards like Grizzly Bears and Air Elemental and there were actually creature battles on the battlefield; it wasn't about getting the unbeatable combo to win the game as early as possible. We were thrilled to pull cards like Shivan Dragon. Royal Ass, Lord of the Pit, Veteran Bodyguard...Shout out to Mrs. Vrana who let me and my friends play after school in the science lab while she was grading papers.
Anyway, I stopped playing around Urza's Saga, I remember being at a local tournament and a friend and I were just watching and commenting how Magic cards just keep getting more powerful each passing year and he made a comment "soon they'll make a card that says: tap to win target game." Little did we know they would do exactly that with the "planeswalkers!"
I sold all my cards in 2012 or 13 for a ton of money (though I could have gotten even more of a ton if I waited and sold them now, c'est la vie) but I still have a fond spot in my heart for old school mtg. So I'm glad I found this sub and will enjoy reading through the posts, thanks.
