SDET (3 YOE) → Product Management: Is it still worth it in 2026?

Career advice

I'm currently an SDET with 3 years of experience. While I've enjoyed the technical side, I've realized that I'm not someone who wants to stay in a deeply technical role for the rest of my career.

What excites me more is understanding user problems, planning products, defining features, working with cross-functional teams, and helping build something from idea to launch.

I'm considering transitioning into Product Management, but I'm unsure if it's the right move in today's market.

A few questions for people in the industry:

- Is Product Management still worth getting into in 2026?

- Compared to technical roles like SDE, DevOps, or SDET, is it a career upgrade, a downgrade, or simply a different career path?

- How are the long-term prospects in terms of growth, compensation, job security, and work-life balance?

- If PM isn't the best path anymore, what would you recommend instead?

- Is AI Product Management a good specialization, or should I look into Product Owner (PO) roles instead?

I'm looking for honest, practical advice—not just "follow your passion." If you were in my position today, what would you do and why?
