Defensive tips, concepts, strategies?

When I first started I found sweeps, submissions etc to be very fun and didn't really put too much time into having good defense and escapes. With that, Im certainly lacking in that department. What tips, concepts or strategies do you guys (and gals) implement for a strong defense?

as always, thanks!
