The difference between "trading" and "investing" — a mix-up that costs beginners money

A common mistake we see at HCB Advisory: people arrive with an investor's time horizon (wanting to preserve and grow capital over years) but pick a trader's tools and approach (short positions, leverage, frequent trades) — or the reverse.

Trading and investing are different disciplines with different demands on your time, emotional resilience, and acceptable risk. Mixing the two without a clear sense of what you're actually doing and why is a common source of disappointment and losses.

Before opening a position, it's worth honestly asking yourself: is this a long-term investment or a speculative trade, and does the instrument you've chosen actually match that answer.
