I feel trapped in a friendship I don't know how to leave.
I'm a 17F, and I've been best friends with this girl for almost three years. At first, I wasn't really feeling being her bestie. I told her I might not be the friend she was looking for, but she kept insisting. When she opened up about her tough past, I felt bad and decided to give it a shot.
The first year was actually pretty chill. She was super insecure, so I spent a lot of time hyping her up, telling her she was pretty and trying to boost her confidence.
But stuff started to change. Our convos became mostly about her. She talks about boys, her life, her drama. Whenever I try to mention myself, she just brushes it off or switches topics. Honestly, I feel like her unpaid therapist instead of her bestie.
Privacy is a big deal to me, but she shares my stuff with her fam even after I told her not to.
She’s also made comments like, "Your husband would probably pick me over you," and she compares herself to me all the time. She’s not chill when I post pics (she’s not supportive), but I always hyped her up.
She says I'm exactly the friend she wanted... someone to protect her, listen, and encourage. But she’s never asked what I need as a friend. She’s cried on me a lot. I've never cried on her.
I still care about her, and I don't think she's a bad person. But after nearly three years, I don't feel emotionally understood or totally comfortable around her.
I don't wanna hurt her cause she's been through a lot. Part of me hopes that when I go to college after high school, the distance might help.
But another part of me feels guilty, like I'm just staying out of obligation. Am I wrong for thinking about ending this friendship?
