Why did God have such immoral things in the Old Testament

I am a Christian and my brother is an atheist. He brought up to me why does the old testament have so many crazy laws such as exodus 35:2 says anyone who works on sabbath day should be killed. I'm aware that we dont follow old testament anymore but why were some of these things here in the first place since God is all loving?
