Midwifery student on placement
Hi guys!
I’m an adult trained nurse and I work in gynaecology, obstetrics and breast services (surgical). We have a midwifery student in with us at the minute on placement as a branch of alternate but related nursing.
I’m really trying my best, chatting to her, trying to show her things but she’s really disengaged and doesn’t seem to even have initiative to even perform a set of observations. I’ve asked if she can do things eg remove a cannula but she stated she can’t as she’s never done this before. I love teaching, offered to show her but she continued to sit.
I completely understand when students are still developing skills and have never carried certain skills out - I’m really willing to teach as I know what it’s like to be a student!
Just wondering if anyone has any advice or insight to let me know if midwifery and nursing are completely different skills or are we trained really differently? I just feel like there are defo transferable skills that could be used in this situation (it’s also placement 5 for this student)
