Real UV sensor on the Watch — why hasn’t this happened yet?
Why it matters: skin cancer screening guidelines exist for a reason, ozone thinning is a real regional issue, and awareness around sun exposure keeps growing. A real-time, on-body UV reading would be genuinely useful for anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors — way more than another iteration of blood pressure trend alerts or a sleep score, honestly.
I say this as a Series 9 owner who has zero reason to upgrade to Series 11 — blood pressure notifications and sleep index already run fine on my 9 via watchOS updates, so there’s no new hardware pulling me toward the newer model. A proper UV sensor would actually be a reason to upgrade, not just a spec bump.
Curious if anyone’s heard rumors about this for the rumored 12/Ultra sensor array, or if there’s a technical reason (cost, chip size, calibration) why no smartwatch maker has done this yet.
