I Give
I give until I hold nothing left for myself.
I open my heart and pour into those I love.
I never stop to consider what remains of me.
I wake each morning,
my muscles easing out yesterday's knots.
Before my feet touch the floor,
I've already started a list of
small ways to make your life easier.
I gauge your mood,
setting the tone of my own beginning.
Soft. Smooth.
Careful not to disturb the delicate balance.
I slip through the day,
barely making a stir, hardly a ripple
as I complete what needs to be done.
Then I crawl into bed,
and my heart sinks.
Another day of effort.
Another day of love shown.
Another day of grace given.
Not a thought returned.
I hold a place in your life.
That much is certain.
A mother's lamp—
the light you'll always pass by.
But it is a lover's heart
I have carried for you all along.
