Received inheritance in Portugal, want to move it to UK
I'm looking for some financial advice, as I'm a bit confused about how this works.
My mum has sadly passed away, and I inherited some money in Portugal. The money is currently sitting in my Portuguese bank account. I have dual Portuguese and British citizenship.
In Portugal, inheritance from parents or grandparents isn't subject to inheritance tax, so I haven't paid any tax on it there.
I'd like to transfer around €50,000 to my UK bank account because the interest rates are much better. The transfer would be from a Portuguese bank account in my name to a UK bank account that's also in my name.
My questions are:
Am I allowed to transfer that amount without any issues?
Would a €50k transfer automatically trigger checks or cause problems with the bank?
Would I need to provide proof of where the money came from?
Would I have to pay any UK tax on the inheritance or on transferring the money?
I'm probably overthinking it, but I don't want to accidentally do anything that could be seen as suspicious or get into trouble with HMRC.
Has anyone been through something similar or knows how this works?
