1.) The Extended Metaphor Gauntlet
Choose one ordinary object, such as a mirror, key, clock, staircase, blade, or candle, and sustain it as the central metaphor for the entire verse.
Constraint: Every four bars must reveal a new property of the object without breaking the metaphor.
Tests: Conceptual discipline, literary devices, progression, vocabulary, and coherence.
2.) One Scene, No Escape
Write an entire verse inside one physical location during one continuous moment.
Examples: an elevator stopping, a hospital hallway, a train platform, a locked studio, or a rooftop at dawn.
Constraint: No flashbacks, location changes, dream sequences, or broad exposition. Everything must be communicated through sensory detail and action.
Tests: Imagery, prose legibility, atmosphere, pacing, and precise word choice.
3.) The Rhyme Mutation Trial
Begin with one multisyllabic rhyme family and gradually transform it across the verse.
Example progression:
Constraint: The rhyme family must evolve phonetically without collapsing into repetition or forced wording.
Tests: Rhyme fluidity, phonetic control, lexicon depth, and natural syntax.
4.) The Double-Meaning Crucible
Write a verse that tells two complete stories simultaneously.
Examples:
- A collapsing relationship and a sinking ship
- Writer’s block and physical imprisonment
- Addiction and gravitational orbit
- A rap battle and a surgical operation
Constraint: Every major image must function within both interpretations.
Tests: Layering, metaphor, conceptual alignment, ambiguity control, and reread value.
5.) Percussion Without Production
Write sixteen bars whose rhythm remains clearly performable without hearing a beat.
Constraint: Include deliberate pauses, internal accents, syncopation, and at least three distinct cadence patterns. Judges should be able to infer the rhythmic architecture from the text alone.
Tests: Metrical flow, percussive syllable placement, cadence variation, and breath control.
