look, i've heard people call "the rip" slow. those people are idiots. or they're the kind of people who think every song needs to slap them across the face within fifteen seconds because spotify has chemically rewired their attention span. this thing doesn't give a damn about any of that. it unfolds at its own pace and basically dares you to keep up. if that's asking too much, there's always another algorithmically generated playlist waiting for you.

it starts with beth gibbons and an acoustic guitar. that's it. no giant hook. no producer trying to impress you with forty-seven tracks stacked on top of each other. just a melody so damn good it doesn't need cosmetic surgery. then, almost before you realize what's happening, the whole thing starts mutating. the electronics creep in. the rhythm changes. suddenly you're listening to an entirely different song without anybody making a big production out of it. that's the genius. there isn't some obnoxious moment where the band screams, "look everybody. we're being experimental." they just do it. because they can.

most bands spend their careers trying to sound interesting.

portishead made interesting sound effortless.

beth gibbons has one of those voices that completely ruins other singers for you. there are technically cleaner vocalists. louder vocalists. people who can hit notes only dogs are supposed to hear. congratulations. here's your trophy. gibbons doesn't waste time showing off because she understands something that too many singers never figure out. if you actually believe what you're singing, you don't have to oversell it. every word sounds lived in. exhausted. human. no vocal gymnastics. no fake drama. just somebody telling the truth while the rest of the industry is busy auditioning for itself.

and that's really what makes this song so dangerous. it doesn't chase you. it doesn't beg. it doesn't throw confetti into the air every thirty seconds hoping you'll mistake stimulation for emotion. it just keeps building until somewhere around the middle you realize you've stopped analyzing it altogether. you're just listening. funny how rare that has become.

the crazy part is this was never the obvious hit. it never became one of those songs that radio beat into the ground until everybody hated it. instead it became the song musicians kept talking about. producers kept stealing from. fans kept handing to each other like contraband. that's usually how the best records work. they don't dominate the charts.

they haunt the people who actually care about music.

and twenty years later, this thing still sounds like it came from somewhere the rest of us haven't caught up to yet. that's not nostalgia.

that's greatness.
