Courier refusing to pay insurance claim, alleging fraud (England)
I’ll keep this initial post brief and respond to comments if anybody could use additional information. Here’s a timeline of what’s happened so far:
Mid May: I purchase accessories for my motorcycle from an online retailer and receive the goods successfully. I find the same products available for less from a different retailer, so decide to return the order in full. Value around £1500. I find that Evri accepts these items and has an affordable insurance policy so I return the goods myself (the retailer requires that postage is arranged by me rather than through them). I have to split the order into two separate parcels as the maximum insurable value is £1000 per package. Inconvenient but acceptable.
Late May: The goods have not been refunded and upon checking the tracking for the items, it has not updated since I dropped them off. I keep watch for a few days and then contact Evri to enquire about the status via their online chatbot. They suggest, after a few days of searching for the parcels, that I open a claim for loss with them. I do so and attach the relevant receipts etc.
Late June: the claim has not received any updates and I’ve had no requests for further information from Evri. I contact them to ask what the delay is. A week or so later they respond and ask for further information (bank statements etc). I submit copies of the statement from Klarna (bought via pay in 30 days, Klarna has kindly put the payment on hold until the issue is resolved with Evri and compensation is paid / until the parcels are found). They assess the information.
One day ago, I received notice from Evri that ‘discrepancies were identified’ in my claim and that my account with them would be closed immediately. They informed me that they would not be paying compensation for either parcel and that the matter had been referred to Action Fraud.
The claims for my parcels are genuine. I have requested an explanation of the basis of their assertion but I am yet to receive a response. I have no strong theory about why this might have been, but I have begun to wonder whether because I had to send the parcels separately due to the value, and therefore attach the same purchase receipts to both claims, this may have been flagged (since the same invoice would have been used across two claims).
There are two separate issues here, I suppose. The first is the recovery of my funds and making payment with Klarna, to whom I owe the full amount. The second is the referral to Action Fraud and what this means for me (whether I need to be taking preemptive action or contacting them directly etc).
If anybody is able to provide practical advice on either point, including suggestions on what I should do next, I would really appreciate the input. The situation has me on edge and although I know I have nothing to worry about and that there is likely a way out / that this could be down to a misunderstanding, the email from Evri was serious in tone and they obviously suspect wrongdoing enough to report me to an agency. I will keep on top of the issue and this post and reply to comments. Thank you.
