I'm (32M)a software project manager by profession, hybrid athlete by passion, and building my own thing at night.

I first realised this pattern in last May, here's how my sleep looked like that day:

* Bedtime: 3:23 AM
* Sleep: 5h 27m
* Restorative sleep: 3:18 (my avg is 3:54)
* Recovery: 60%
* Previous day's strain: 15.7

My restorative sleep target is 4hrs given that 6hrs is regular sleep as a 30+ guy, on most days of the week. After a 15.7 strain day, I got 3:18. As WHOOP members you know how much even one minute of restorative sleep matters for recovery.

When I woke up I was in rough shape. Body not recovered from the last gym session, muscles sore. Brain foggy by 10am in a way that lasted for hours, and my focus was everywhere.

I started thinking about what I'd done wrong. When I checked my screen time, it showed Instagram usage in the early hours of the morning; which is something I never do. Then I put it together. At midnight, my iPhone screen time limit reset which I set to protect myself from consuming content. A few IG notifications came in. I tapped to check. One thing led to another and I ended up burning through half of the next day's screen time budget before I even slept that day.

I didn't plan to scroll that night. I planned to complete my personal project task for the day and wind down. That distraction cost my sleep quality and the deep work session I had planned the next day.

I took lots of natural electrolyte drinks that day (I avoid caffeine in such days to protect night sleep) and in the evening I forced myself out for a long walk even though every part of me said not to. I'm glad that I did exactly the opposite ;). That walk fixed my attention more than anything else would have.

What frustrates me is that the tool I trusted to protect me reset at midnight, as if my day ends at midnight. It doesn't. Mine ends early morning; like most working professionals who are working towards a goal on the side.  
  
I understand that whoop journal has the option to log the social media usage but not on how we consumed that, also it never gave me proper insights on recovery, except the screen usage in bed, which is a separate topic. What I'm saying, social media addiction is a big topic in modern day when it comes to recovery.

I'm not blaming these apps entirely. But sometimes the systems you trust to protect you does not designed around on how the real human's day looks like. 

Curious if anyone else tracks this pattern. Do your recovery scores dip on nights your screen time is high? Do you get more light sleep on those nights rather than restorative sleep?
